Irregular idle and throttle response - Please help
I have a 98 1.8T A4 that has irregular idle and throttle response - 168k miles.
The car isn't really drivable and I can't seem to figure out what the problem is.
At idle it will attempts to stall out then recovers sometime
Upon giving gas it may or may not respond.
My best guess is it may be the throttle positioning sensor.
I have no check engine light.
The ICM is relatively new and I replaced 2 of the coil packs.
Does anyone have a VAG COM I can use to see what might be wrong?
I'm located in Redwood City right off Woodside Ave.
Thanks

Re: could be a coil pack again
Don't think so.
Remember there is no check engine light - coil packs usually give piston misfire.
Also - if i turn my car off and let the throttle body self adjust when the key is in accessory mode it will start up fine and act normal until i drive it (the throttle is in heavy use).
My question is with a new throttle body is there anything you need to tell the ecu to do? Does it need to reprogram itself, or is a new throttle body pure plug and play?

DBW '00, I'd suspect Temp Sensor on the back of the block. Car would be confused of start temps.....
think it was warm at first start in the morning. Rough, varied idle, bad acceleration response.
Same in a '98??
If thats it. Buy the VW sensor. Costs less than the Audi sensor (same part too).
Hope this helps!

I replaced the coolant sensor that goes in the plastic waterneck on the rear of the engine...between the firewall and block.
Is that what you're talking about?

Re: I had to replace a TB on my 98 A4 B5 5 years ago
Thanks. I'm pretty sure its my tb also.
Problem is I don't have a vag-com scanner.
Does anyone is the BAY Area have a VAG-COM I can use briefly?
