Default Re: Yeah Wilwoods suck...So specifically which Wilwood caliper sucked?

How long ago?

Can you elaborate on the problems?

I'd like to know for reasons of my own saftey.

Thanks!

Default Alcon and S-03

Scott,

When I upgraded the brakes on my S8 to 6-pot Alcon's, I had the exact same reaction as you did,

"...these brakes are incredible ... all I can say is WOW! ... The car stops on a dime and has never been more fun to drive. Its so easy to fly into the corners and feel confident that my brakes will slow me down instantly."

I had a very soft pedal with the OE Brembo's, and these brakes were not even strong enough to activate the ABS system on clean dry asphalt roads. [The Dunlop SP8000's had more grip than the brakes, which is not the way it's supposed to be.] The only issue with the Alcon's and Ferodo FRP3000s pads was that modulation required a bit of finesse. Get on the brakes too hard, and it was very easy to get into the ABS. Threshold braking required a very deliberate conscious effort.

And then I upgraded wheels and tires, going from the 245/45-18 Dunlop SP-8000 to the 255/35-20 Bridgestone S-03 Pole Position. The difference was night-and-day ... again. The ability to control braking at the threshold of ABS now seems almost instinctive.

Alcon's and S-03's: a very highly recommended package.

BTW, that's a pretty slick web site you have! And I'm also in the Pittsburg area (little Washington).

https://forums.audiworld.com/a8/msgs/5406.phtml</a

Default These...

Had to have a local shop rebuild them a couple times. Issues with the pistons. Maybe mine were just a bad lot but I have heard (after the fact) of other people having similar problems.
I drove them in the winter too so I guess I didn't expect any refunds but I just wouldn't trust these on track where flex and heat related issues can cause problems. They seemed to overheat a lot with repetitive hard braking and I'd get air in the lines.
I sold them with the car, so it's NMP anymore.

wilwood brake kit

Default 1-2 events a year?

If you're not a hard driver and won't be getting track-addicted...you don't need much brake.
Rotor size is good for braking though - but don't add looks for uneccessary weight. Also, make sure you don't just throw on any old Porsche caliper without being sure the piston sizes are matched properly for your specific car / master cylinder. Better not to mess with the bias front to rear. IF it's not just the right amount, you end up screwing up brake bias and you actually may stop in longer distance!
Lots of people think you can just slap on any big brake kit without regard to the fact that that caliper may have been engineered to a totally different car and setup and it won't work on YOUR car properly.
Good luck.

Default I have the Willwood kit from RPI with the A8 rotors and the Superlight calipers (4 pot) .....

and have tracked the car a lot! have recorded temps up to 975f and have had NO fade with the proper pads (hawk blue)On the street i use hawk hp pads and have been very happy with these as well. I would deff. reccommend this kit IMHO.

Default One suggestion ...

Scott,

I may be nitpicking, but I believe your rotor hat bolts are mounted backwards. To create minimum aero turbulence in front of the rotor's inlet vanes, the head of the low drag button head cap screws should be inboard, the nuts should be outboard. On the street, either way is fine; but on the track, you'll get at least a little more rotor cooling with the hat bolts turned around.

Default I would estimate that my brakes will only see track action a couple of times per year...

I'd like to run it on the track more than that, but I'm not in close proximity to a track.

It's somewhat disappointing because my car is really a perfect track machine except for the brakes. If you know of any Pittsburgh/Western PA tracks or events, I'd love to hear about them. The only one I am aware of is a weekly Autocross at North Park in Pittsburgh, but that's not really what I'm looking for.

Default Randy, when are we going to get together?! I didn't know you lived so close...

to me. I'm in Canonsburg and I'd love to get together with you some time. Scott is in Pittsburgh, too, so maybe the three of us can get together some Saturday and compare notes.

I just had the full TDL Racing 230 Conversion, and I promised some of my A4 brethren that I'd post up some people's reactions to the work. It would be great if you could drive the car and post up some of your thoughts.

Also, your sig pic is of you racing. Was that locally? I'm trying to find a track locally where I can take my car out and see what it can do. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Default I'm leaving in a few minutes for the SCCA Valvoline Runoffs at Mid-Ohio ...

... practice and qualifying this week, race next Sunday Sept 23. You can see a photo of our "real" car, a '94 van Diemen Formula Continental, in the Gallery on FormulaContinental.com, my brother Don Young is the driver. Most of the week after that I'll be in Akron, and the following weekend at the Indianapolis F1 race. ... but absolutely yes, let's all get together. I'll be in touch via email.

The sig photo is from the June Quattro Club event, a great two days, also at Mid-Ohio. Except for the Quattro Club events, I don't believe that Mid-Ohio generally let's cars run on the track without a roll cage. Nelson Ledges is a little closer, about 2-1/2 hour, but I'm not sure on their track rental policies. The Quattro Club also runs an event at Nelson. I don't know of any closer tracks.

If you're will to make an 8 hour drive, there's Gingerman Raceway in Michigan. I've heard they often have open track days on Wednesdays and Thurdays for the bargain price of $50.

S8 at Mid-Ohio
