Huh? Maybe some lame HID kits, but any decent one will take a standard D2S bulb.

Bought a kit for my Mazda 3 but never ended up installing it.

That's what I want, projectile headlights. I'd like them in 120mm smoothbore size, APFSDS depleted uranium tipped rounds....

The ones that come with a lens and reflector use a standard D2S bulb or similar. If you mean a retrofit kit that uses a D2S element melded onto an H4 base, for example, then yes, it will be difficult to impossible to get a replacement bulb from other than the same company you got the kit from.

The other problem is the height/aiming issue...going uphill or downhill the non-leveling lights blind people.

SEMA might disagree. As long as the OEM HID light assemblies and leveling sensors/systems are installed, the system is indistinguishable from HIDs installed at the factory.

well i have yet to see any aftermarket kits that use D2S bulbs. We all know most of the people who do these buy cheap **** from ebay. Iv had to rip probably a dozen out of cars, various audi bmw mercedes, and they are some strange bulb with the harness attached as one unit.

That is an issue no matter what. The only time self-leveling HIDs reaim themselves is if the difference in height between the front and rear axles change. As in, taking people in the back seat. Or going over a speed hump.

It will do virtually nothing if the car is going uphill, nor should it do anything. It's just a straight line pointing upwards.

And you'll have to worry about the apex anyway, as the guy nearing the apex from the opposite direction will still be blinded by self-leveling HIDs.

Some turn the lights into the corner. Not good for your left hand turn oncoming traffic. Other cars will sense uphill/downhill and lower/raise the lights.

But without a DOT cert they can shove it...

Cant tell you how many lights ive had to get DOT certification on for government projects, PAIN IN THE ***, i doubt very much a retrofit kit would meet the exacting standards of DOT certification which is why most if not all dont carry it
