Yeah wish I was ever as lucky as some people with their 10% off MSRP and being offered more than Car Max for trade in's. I'm going to assume this will go down as usual and be less than Car Max, then have to figure out if what the dealer will give me for the car plus the tax reduction against the car is more or equal to what Car Max would give me for the car. I'll shoot for at least whatever Car Max will give me but I guess can accept that minus whatever difference the tax reduction would be. Probably have a good 2 months until the vehicle will be here before I have to do anything.

Just traded our Q5 for a Q8 and was offered 1K more by the dealer plus the tax savings amounted to almost $1500 additional; nearly $2500 total. The only time I've ever actually ended up selling to Carmax was the one time I was not replacing it with another vehicle. I've normally found Carmax useful mostly just to check that the dealer is being honest.

Yup, gotta love that part about us living in CA. Its funny hearing some others discuss and complain about the 6.25% etc taxes and the minimal credits they receive on trade when we pay 9.5 to 10% plus in taxes and do not get squat on a trade in as far as tax credit. Every time my sister is town and the cost of living here comes up and she always says "why do you live here again?" and then I tell her I will get back to her with an answer once she gets back home to MN and is done shoveling her driveway of snow for the third time that week
