Default A4 2.6 Buying Questions

Hi Everyone,

Due to the write off of my last car I've been looking around for something else and stumbled upon an A4 2.6 on the weekend. I went for a drive and was extremely impressed but won't be buying that one due to colour and price.

I've had a look on the net since then and I've seen prices from $15k to $25k for the 2.6's...why such a wide price range?

So far I've figured out that these are A4/2.6 specific things I should look out for in addition to the regular used car stuff:
- Timing belt change, preferably with thermostat and water pump at the same time. (what's the interval?)
- Front suspension control arms (clunking etc)
- Electrics (window regulator, cruise etc)

Is there anything else I should be investigating or need to know before I buy? I will be buying in Sydney when I go there at the end of next week, are there any good Audi specialists who can do a pre-purchase inspection for me and how much do they charge?

Thanks in advance for your replies and hopefully I'll be an Audi driver in the next two weeks!

Dan

Quattro models will be more expensive, but well worth it in my opinion.

I think the A4 had a significant change to the ECU in 1997 on, but with a 2.6 there no chips available so it probably doesn't matter. Not sure what else was different thou. The next update was half way thorugh 1998 so 98.5 on would command a higher proces as well. The 98.5 chages include some cosmetic changes as well.

Cheers,

There are chips available.

but that engine is discsontinued.

i think you would be hapier with a 2.4 engine if you can find one in the price range.

Price range is usually dictated by Kms on clock and generanl condition of the car.

I just sold a 96 2.6 for $15000 170kms things I had to fix before selling it were CVjoints, timing belts, power steering leak, check the rotors as they diminish with the pads (too soft) air-con fan goes at about 150Km, electric windows at about the same kms, shockers at about 110-120km, timing belts every 80-90Km, once had a problem with the key and when you start it would start then shut down straight away ($700 part) Mine was a great car it was still in good order after that many Kms.
