Speaking of oil changes...
Is anyone planning on changing out the OEM oil in the first 1000 miles? I usually change the first fill after 600 or so miles. If there ever is going to be metal in the oil, it's in the first few hundred miles.
opinions?
PS - At least I didn't meantion the %^&*(fin

I just looked at my oil yesterday after I reached the 1000 mile mark and it was remarkably clean.
I will probably change it in 2 weeks after I do a track day.
I have always been habitual about changing my oil and filter after a lapping day and since it's new, all the more reason to swap it out.

It probably IS clean...
but what I worry about is the metal suspended in the oil from the break-in process. I know todays filtration systems are better than ever before, but since I was 14 and built my first small block, I've dumped the oil and filter after about 600 miles on fresh engines. I think I'm going to do it as a precaution with the S4 also. For the $50 bucks or so, it's cheap insurance.

Good idea to change it...
As you stated, M3expat, it's cheap insurance. And as most of you may already know, the M3 has a 1200 mile break-in period, after which they change the motor, diff and tranny fluids.
What is the recommended oil weight and capacity for the B6 S4? For the M3, it's about 6 liters and the Castrol 10w-60 synthetic is roughly $8/liter from the dealer. Ouch.

Look at it this way...
If Audi doesn't require it, I wouldn't worry about it. But it sure wouldn't hurt any. I know that my oil service indicator on my M3 suggested my first oil change (other than the 1200 mile break-in service) at 11,500 miles. Do YOU feel comfortable with that drain interval? I don't...that's why I change my oil every 5000 miles. But I know that if I didn't do this, the car would probably be just fine. So, it's not _bad_ not to change it, but I'll bet that it is better (even if only marginally) to change it.
I know you're asking about dif/tranny fluids and I'm talking about oil, but you get the point.

With the B5s there was a rumor about a special factory only break in oil...
...that was supposed to stay in the engine for the first 5000 miles. Not sure if there's any truth to it or if the same rumor applies to B6s...

Planning on starting the rumor here too? :) The spec on these seems to be a little looser, but it's
hard to say if it extends to this or not.....
I intend to look carefully and closely at my oil after this next week's track session before deciding whether to change it or not.
