Why, Why, Why!? 1.8T in Passat has 5,000 mile maintenance, while 1.8T Audi A4 is 10,000?
I bought my wife a '04 Passat w/1.8T manual. My '02 A4 Avant Tip has the same 1.8T. They seem to be the same engine to me. All else being equal (HP, driving condition, miles, weather, etc), why then does VW want me to do maintenance every 5,000 miles, yet Audi says I can go 10,000 between oil changes?
With the recent sludge issues, it makes me nervous to go that long on my Audi (although I understand I can always take it in sooner per my driving conditions) between oil changes. I know that Audi would not mind.
Taking my wife's car in for its 10,000 miles maintenance on Monday. Even though VW is not requiring synthetic on a '04, I requested it anyway @ 5,000 in response to the recent sludge problems. Of course VW eagerly agreed, as they charged me twice as much for the same amount of work.
Anyone have any information?

Have you considered doing your own oil changes?
Outside of the scheduled ones?
It's not too difficult - and it means that you can use top quality materials, do itt properly and save money over the dealership. I'm constantly stalked by mechanical disasters when I try to do anything and even I can do it successfully - just make sure you get the correct bits to minimise mess.
The scheduled oil change interval is for normal driving conditions - I read an article recently which demonstrated that most of the conditions we actually drive in don't qualify as normal.
As for sludge, as a last resort you can always rely on the 8 year warranty extension.
Doesn't seem to be any reasonable explanation for the difference though.

they do a bit more than an oil change for scheduled maintenance. in my experience, they tend to check everything, whether or not it would likely need replacing (e.g. they noticed my brake fluid was low and filled it to preempt having to bring the car back in after 5k).

Yeah, but right now we live in a condo, and do not have a really good place to do it. The lighting is really bad to something like tha.

I do oil-only changes every 5-7.5k miles. Takes < 5 mins w/Griots Oil Extractor.
